Is This the Year?

There was a time when Fall meant: call the Trophy Shop and order Lawrence High’s State Championship Football Trophy. Lawrence has claimed 27 State Football Championships over the years, 10 since the current playoff system was introduced in 1969. Its kind of a big deal around here. The last title claimed in Football was in 1995 (the 95-96 school year). In 1997 the Lawrence School district went to 2 High Schools. Lawrence Free State was opened and the city (neither school has won state in football) has gone without a title since.

This year there is a buzz around town. Its been building for a few years now. After a few down years, the program at LH has turned around and this year the expectations are high! LH defeated Blue Valley West handily in week one 35-14. The Chesty Lions have a lot of returning talent and they are very big and athletic. Free State is loaded as well although they dropped a close game to Shawnee Mission West 34-26 in week 1.

Typically these team meet every year in district play. Not only are bragging rights on the line but a trip to the State Playoffs usually awaits the winner. Due to recent developments in the Class 6A demographic in Kansas, Free State now enters the playoffs representing the West. Hmmmmm.

Is this the Year Lawrence gets back her coveted football trophy? Will It come from the East as it did for years and years or will it rise from the West for the first time ever? Stay tuned, it should be an exciting year around town!

Let’s get ready to rumble!
